Yankees Game 121: Ellsbury and company lead charge in Yankees win
Four home runs, including the first for Ronald Torreyes, led the Yankees to the shutout win.
New York Yankees 7 – Los Angeles Angels 0
Starting a West coast trip, the Yankees paid a visit to the Los Angeles Angels.
No jet lag for Jacoby as the Yankees center fielder greets Angels starter Jered Weaver with a lead off home run in the first inning. Ronald Torreyes became the second run batted in by Jacoby Ellsbury when Ellsbury hit a single following a double by Torreyes in the third inning.
In the fifth inning, the Bronx Bombers made it rain baseballs.
Against Jered Weaver, Ronald Torreyes hit his first career home run, a no doubt solo home run to left field. Didi Gregorius added a solo home run of his own and later Brian McCann hit one of his own to make it a five-run lead for the Yankees.
With two outs and Aaron Hicks on first against reliever Mike Morin in the sixth inning, Ronald Torreyes brought home Hicks with another hit, a run-scoring single in a career-night for the Yankees third baseman. The Angels brought in lefty Brett Oberholtzer but Didi Gregorius continues feasting on lefties when he hit a ground-rule double to right to bring home Torreyes and make the Yankees lead seven.
Masahiro Tanaka retired the first 11 Angels batters to face him but Mike Trout and Albert Pujols hit singles to snap the streak. A ground out by Jefry Marte squashed the two-out rally as Tanaka continued a strong outing. Mike Trout added a second hit later but was stranded. In the eighth inning, Jett Bandy and Gregorio Petit got on base with singles that knocked Tanaka out of the game. Lefty Tommy Layne could not get his single assignment out when he walked Kole Calhoun to load the bases. Adam Warren was given the tall task of facing Mike Trout with the bases loaded but got him to take called strike three looking with the bases loaded to finish off the pitching line for Tanaka.
In 7 2/3 innings, Masahiro Tanaka allowed no runs on five hits while striking out a season-high nine. All five hits were singles.
Kirby Yates got the nod with the seven-run lead in the ninth inning. He gave up one hit but pitched a scoreless ninth inning to secure the dominant win.
Win – Masahiro Tanaka (10-4)
Loss – Jered Weaver (8-11)
