Yankees Game 153: Offense comes up empty again in Yankees loss
Kept to 3 hits, none in 6 ABs with runners in scoring position; the New York Yankees are shutout for the second consecutive game.
New York Yankees 0 – Toronto Blue Jays 9 The Yankees go north of the border for their last road trip of the season. In the first inning against Francisco Liriano, the Yankees appeared to be generating a two-out rally. Gary Sanchez hit a ground-rule double and walks of Billy Butler and Didi Gregorius loaded the bases but a strikeout of Chase Headley stranded the bases loaded, a common problem for the Yankees lately. With one out in the first inning, Bryan Mitchell could not count on his defense. First baseman Billy Butler could not come up with a ground ball that allowed Josh Donaldson to reach base. Edwin Encarnacion hit a single to put two on and with two outs Russell Martin walked to load the bases. Unlike the Yankees, Troy Tulowitzki and the Blue Jays cashed in with a two-run single from the shortstop. The Blue Jays added a third run in the second inning when Edwin Encarnacion walked with the bases loaded. Further damage was denied when second baseman Ronald Torreyes made a great play to begin a double play to end the inning. In six innings, Bryan Mitchell allowed three runs, one earned, on six hits. He walked four and struck out two. His start began poorly but he settled down and toughed out six quality innings against a potent offense.
Summing up the Yankees offense tonight; the third inning was the last inning they had two players on base in one inning. Blake Parker came on in the seventh inning but could not hold down the Jays offense. Ezequiel Carrera and Devon Travis led off with singles to put runners on the corners. On a fly ball to right field foul territory, Aaron Hicks made a strong throw home that catcher Brian McCann did not field cleanly, allowing Travis to advance to second base. After an intentional walk of Edwin Encarnacion, Jose Bautista hit a ringing double to left field that scored two. Russell Martin walked to load the bases once again and Troy Tulowitzki hit a two-run single to right that put the Blue Jays ahead by seven. James Pazos helped Parker out of the inning without further damage. In the eighth inning, rookie Ben Heller gave up a double to Travis and Donaldson brought him home with ease on the two-run home run. The Yankees were set down in order to ensure a second shutout defeat.
