Yankees Game 157: Sanchez, Didi and Austin go yard in Yankees win
The New York Yankees turned to young arms and bats as Gary Sanchez, Didi Gregorius and Tyler Austin backed up Luis Cessa to a win over the Boston Red Sox.
Boston Red Sox 4 – New York Yankees 6 After an exhilarating win to leave Toronto with; the Yankees return home to play the rival Red Sox. Luis Cessa pitched a scoreless first inning and the Yankees started strong against David Price in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Jacoby Ellsbury got on base with a single and Gary Sanchez continued an outstanding rookie campaign. On the first pitch from Price, Sanchez took him deep to left-center field for his 20th home run of the year.
The game remained 2-0 until the fifth inning. Austin Romine and Tyler Austin led off with singles. Brett Gardner sacrificed them into scoring position and Jacoby Ellsbury brought home one run on a single to extend the Yankees lead to three. In the sixth inning, Luis Cessa showed signs of tiring. On a soft single by Andrew Benintendi, Cessa tried to make a play but threw it into right field for an error. A single by Dustin Pedroia allowed the first Red Sox run to score. Xander Bogaerts put two into scoring position with a double and Pedroia came around to score on a single by Mookie Betts. The Yankees lead was cut down to one but a strikeout of Hanley Ramirez ended the inning with the lead intact. In six innings, Luis Cessa allowed two runs on five hits. He walked one and struck out two in a strong outing against the division leader.
In the bottom half of the inning, Didi Gregorius hit a two-out solo home run, also his 20th of the season to extend the Yankees lead back to two. Tommy Layne was the first reliever to come on for the seventh inning and pinch-hitter Aaron Hill was the immediate response when he took Layne deep for a solo home run to bring them back within one. Jackie Bradley Jr. followed with a single and he advanced to second on a sacrifice. After a strikeout of Benintendi, Dustin Pedroia tied the game with a single. Blake Parker wrapped up the inning but the game was tied until the bottom of the seventh. Austin Romine led off with a single and Tyler Austin went the other way for his ninth home run of the season, a two-run home run that put the Yankees back ahead. In 6 1/3 innings, David Price allowed six runs on 12 hits. He walked one and struck out two as he continues to struggle against the Yankees.
Blake Parker and Richard Bleier combined for a scoreless eighth inning. In the ninth inning, Tyler Clippard got the first out but Benintendi hit a double to bring the tying run to the plate. A walk of Dustin Pedroia made the warm water hot as the tying runs were now on the bases. A pop out of Xander Bogaerts was the second out and a strikeout of David Ortiz sent Yankees fans happy with a win.
