Yankees Game 160: Orioles made it rain homers in the Yankees loss
Under a steady rain, the Yankees watched as three Orioles home runs went over the wall in tonight's loss.
Baltimore Orioles 8 – New York Yankees 1 The season is coming to a close with a three-game home finale against the Baltimore Orioles. After three scoreless innings by Michael Pineda, the two-out difficulties that he is all too familiar with presented itself in the fourth inning. With two outs, Chris Davis got on base with a single. J.J. Hardy followed with a single and they both came around to score on a two-run double by Jonathan Schoop. The Orioles went ahead by two.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Mark Teixeira brought home the first Yankees run on a sacrifice fly to left field but a rough fifth inning proved to be too much for tonight's doused offense. In the fifth inning, the wheels fell off of a good start by Michael Pineda. Adam Jones led off the fifth inning with a solo home run to the second deck in left field. Then with one out and one on, Mark Trumbo added to his league-leading home run total when he hit a two-run home run to left field too. Pineda was taken out of the game with one out in the inning and James Pazos came on in relief. Pazos got the second out of the inning but Chris Davis followed with a double. A walk of J.J. Hardy extended the inning and Jonathan Schoop hit a three-run home run to left for a deflating six-run inning.
In 4 1/3 innings, Michael Pineda allowed five runs on six hits. He walked three and struck out five. An unspectacular end to an inconsistent start for the righty.
Following Pineda and Pazos, Anthony Swarzak pitched two scoreless innings of relief. In the eighth inning, Chasen Shreve walked two and allowed a mother nature-aided single to load the bases. Shreve got Drew Stubbs to fly out, Manny Machado to strikeout and Mark Trumbo to fly out to escape the inning without a run scoring. Ben Heller pitched a scoreless ninth inning. Despite the Yankees loading the bases in the ninth inning, a strikeout of Mason Williams and a ground out by Ronald Torreyes ended the inning without a rally for runs in tonight's loss.
