Yankees Game 162: Wieters goes deep twice to end Yankees season in defeat
The New York Yankees wrap up the season in defeat as Matt Wieters fueled the Orioles to the Yankees' defeat with home runs from both sides of the plate.
Baltimore Orioles 2 – New York Yankees 5 For the last game of the season, the Yankees looked to take the final 2016 series against the Baltimore Orioles. After two scoreless innings by Luis Cessa, the Orioles manufactured a run in the third inning. After a ground-rule double by Jonathan Schoop, he advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a sacrifice fly by J.J. Hardy to put the Orioles ahead by one. In the fourth inning, Mark Trumbo reached on an infield single with two outs and Matt Wieters made the inning count with a two-run home run to right field to extend the Orioles lead to three.
In the fourth inning, Brian McCann reached a season streak milestone when he hit a solo home run off of Kevin Gausman to right. The home run made it 20 for the season, his ninth consecutive season of 20 or more home runs. With one on and two out in the sixth inning, Luis Cessa was removed from the game in favor of lefty Tommy Layne. With Wieters turned from the left side to the right, the Orioles catcher went deep for the second time today, another two-run home run that made the score 5-1, Orioles. In 5 2/3 innings, Luis Cessa allowed four runs on five hits. He walked none and struck out six.
Blake Parker, Adam Warren and Richard Bleier combined for three scoreless innings to give the Yankees a fighting chance to get back in the game. Notably, in the seventh inning, Gary Sanchez was a huge part of outs being recorded as he caught two base runners in the inning. In the seventh inning, Mark Teixeira bid farewell to the Yankee Stadium crowd as he received a tremendous ovation. He thanked his teammates and the fans as he waved his cap and exited the game of baseball for the final time.
Didi Gregorius brought the Yankees within three on a single to center in the eighth inning but that was as close as the Yankees could get. Orioles closer Zach Britton pitched the final 1 2/3 innings to secure their win to secure a spot in the Wild Card game.
