Seattle Mariners 4 -- New York Yankees 2
With the series shortened due to rain, the Yankees settled for two with the visiting Seattle Mariners.
In the first inning, against Hiroki Kuroda the Mariners plated the first run when Robinson Cano pulled an inside pitch to right field for a run-scoring double. But the Yankees wouldn't wait long to make up that run.
Leading off the bottom of the inning, Jacoby Ellsbury hit his first home run as a Yankee to tie the game off of Roenis Elias. Unfortunately for the Yankees, that was the biggest hit the Yankees really managed against Elias. Following the home run, the Yankees would go down in order, all on strikeouts. After a single in the second inning, McCann would ground into a double play and despite the next two batters reaching base, the two-out rally would go for nothing.
Kuroda would give up a run in the third inning on a fielder's choice and the Mariners would get to Kuroda in the fourth inning. Two runs would come in the fourth inning on two base hits with two outs. He would finally settle down in the fifth inning and get his final six batters out before ending his night.
In six innings, Hiroki Kuroda allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits while walking one and striking seven.
The Yankees would score their second run in the sixth inning after an unusual decision by Robinson Cano. With one on and two outs, Mark Teixeira hit a ground ball to Cano who threw to shortstop Brad Miller for a force at second but Miller expected Cano to not involve him in the play and Teixeira would reach on the error by Cano. Brian McCann would take advantage of the extra out and hit an opposite field single to bring home the run.
Over seven innings, Roenis Elias held the Yankees to two runs, one unearned, on six hits while striking out 10 and walking two.
Win - Roenis Elias (2-2)
Loss - Hiroki Kuroda (2-3)
Save - Fernando Rodney (6)
