Yankees Game 34: Sale shuts down the Bronx
Luis Severino struggles, exits with injury while Chris Sale dominated.
Chicago White Sox 7 – New York Yankees 1
The Yankees had a tough task in facing Chicago White Sox ace Chris Sale.
After a scoreless first inning between Chris Sale and Luis Severino, the season-long struggles continued for Severino in the second inning. Brett Lawrie led off with a double and with one out, Alex Avila brought Lawrie home with a double of his own. After a walk of Austin Jackson, Adam Eaton reached on an infield single to load the bases. Then with two outs, Jose Abreu hit a two-run single to put the White Sox ahead 3-0.
In the bottom of the second inning, Chase Headley kept the good times rolling with his second home run in as many nights. Unfortunaely, the struggles for Luis Severino came to a peak in the third inning.
After getting the first two outs of the third inning, Severino gave up a single to Avila and walked Jackson for the second time. Adam Eaton brought them both home with a double and Jimmy Rollins dealt the big blow, a two-run home run to right field to put the White Sox ahead by a score of 7-1. To make matters worse for the young Severino, he exited the game with an injury. It was later revealed to be “soreness on the back of his right elbow.”
In 2 2/3 innings, Luis Severino allowed seven runs on seven hits with four walks and two strikeouts. He needed 81 pitches, unlike his ace of an opponent tonight.
Following Severino, relievers Nick Goody, Chasen Shreve and Kirby Yates combined for 6 1/3 scoreless innings with Goody handling the heavy workload, going 3 1/3 innings.
For the Yankees offense, Chris Sale pitched like the ace he is. After a one-out single in the second inning, Chris Sale retired 20 of the next 21 with Mark Teixeira getting a single in the fourth inning. In the ninth inning, Starlin Castro led off with a single and Mark Teixeira hit a one-out double but they were ultimately stranded on a complete game by Chris Sale.
Win – Chris Sale (8-0)
Loss – Luis Severino (0-6)
