Yankees Game 4: Substitute Yankees offense silent on road debut
Zimmermann and the Tigers silence half-powered Yankees offense.
New York Yankees 0 – Detroit Tigers 4
The Yankees first game on the road is to the host Detroit Tigers.
After a scoreless first inning against new Tiger Jordan Zimmermann, Luis Severino made his season debut and quickly surrendered a leadoff double to Ian Kinsler. After getting the first out of the inning, Miguel Cabrera hit a single to right field, scoring Kinsler and putting the Tigers ahead early.
The game remained at 1-0 until a fourth inning issue snowballed for Severino.
After getting the first out in the fourth inning, Luis Severino gave up an unusual single to center field after Jacoby Ellsbury appeared to lose the line drive to center field. Nick Castellanos and James McCann followed with a pair of singles to load the bases and Jose Iglesias brought in the second Tigers run of the game with a single to right field. A fielder's choice ground out added a third run to the Tigers lead before Severino navigated the difficult inning, ending the fourth inning trailing by three.
With veterans Alex Rodriguez, Carlos Beltran and Brian McCann resting after three straight games at home, the weakened Yankees lineup was no match for Zimmermann.
Over the seven innings by Jordan Zimmermann, the Yankees were not able to put more than one batter on base in an inning. They mustered two hits and three walks over his seven innings of work.
Luis Severino exited after two singles in the sixth inning but reliever Johnny Barbato shut the door on the Tigers, striking out three despite giving up a single that loaded the bases.
In five innings, Luis Severino allowed three runs on a scattered 10 hits, nine for singles, while walking none and striking out five.
Reliever Luis Cessa made his major league debut in the seventh inning and struck out the first batter he faced but Miguel Cabrera gave him the big welcome with a solo home run to right field, extending the Tigers lead to four, a score that stood for the remainder of the game, a shutout loss to start the Yankees road series.
