Yankees Game 85: Green clubbed with four home runs in loss
Chad Green and the Yankees are put into an early hole with five home runs surrendered in tonight's loss.
New York Yankees 1 – Cleveland Indians 10
After escaping with the first win, the Yankees turn to a rookie against an All-Star.
The Yankees were held scoreless in the first inning by All-Star Corey Kluber, Chad Green took to the mound but received a rude greeting. Lead off hitter Carlos Santana took Green deep to right field for a solo home run. Jason Kipnis followed with a home run of his own to put Green and the Yankees in an early two-run hole.
Green continued his struggles by walking Francisco Lindor but retired the next two batters. With two outs, Lonnie Chisenhall had the biggest hit of the inning, a two-run home run that put the Yankees in an early 4-0 hole.
Kluber held the Yankees off the scoreboard and the Indians struck against Green in the third inning. After a one-out walk of Lindor, Mike Napoli hit a deep two-run home run to left field to put the Yankees in a six-run deficit. Chad Green got one out in the fifth inning before Kipnis knocked him out of the game with a single. Reliever Richard Bleier allowed Kipnis to come around and score on a double by Lindor, finishing Green's poor pitching line. Mike Napoli added a run-scoring single and by the end of the fifth inning the Yankees trailed by eight.
In 4 1/3 innings, Chad Green allowed seven runs on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Four of the five hits allowed were home runs.
The Indians added another run on a ground out in the sixth inning but the Yankees prevented the shutout in the seventh inning when Brian McCann went the other way for a solo home run, his 14th of the season. The Indians responded to the home run in equal fashion as Jason Kipnis took Anthony Swarzak deep for his second home run of the evening.
Brian McCann made it a two-RBI night with a run-scoring double in the ninth inning but it did little in tonight's resounding defeat.
Win – Corey Kluber (9-8)
