Yankees Game 97: Inability by offense looms in extra inning loss
Offense cannot plate enough runs in the Yankees extra inning loss tonight.
San Francisco Giants 2 – New York Yankees 1 (12 innings)
After taking the first game with the Giants, the Yankees looked to add another win against a strong team.
Through the first three innings, the Giants' Johnny Cueto and Ivan Nova matched each other in zeroes but Cueto needed many more pitches to get through it. In the second inning, Ivan Nova received exceptional help from his defense. After a lead off single by Jarrett Parker, Ivan Nova got the next two outs but a fly ball to left field appeared to give the Giants a scoring opportunity. On the fly ball, Brett Gardner handled it with his bare hand and threw it to Didi Gregorius who unleashed a strong throw home to Brian McCann to get Williamson at home, maintaining the zero on the scoreboard.
After working around a pair of lead off singles in the third inning by producing a strikeout and a double play, the Yankees managed to get to Johnny Cueto in the fourth inning.
Didi Gregorius reached first base on an infield single with one out. On a single to right field by Mark Teixeira, right fielder Mac Williamson could not come up with the ball and the fielding error allowed Gregorius to score on the play.
The lead did not last long as Ivan Nova served up a solo home run to Mac Williamson in the fifth inning. Cueto and Nova held the score at 1-1 as Cueto went six innings and Nova went seven.
In seven innings, Ivan Nova allowed one run on six hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.
Andrew Miller pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Aroldis Chapman added two innings of relief as this game entered extra innings. In the 10th inning, Aaron Hicks led off with a walk against lefty Josh Osich in his second inning of relief. After a passed ball put Hicks into scoring position, Osich also walked Brett Gardner to put two on with no outs. Closer Santiago Casilla came in for relief and got the first out on a sacrifice bunt from Ellsbury to move both runners into scoring position and force the Giants to load the bases. After the intentional walk of Carlos Beltran, Brian McCann was unable to hit a fly ball deep enough as he added the second out. A fly out to right field ended the inning with the bases loaded.
Dellin Betances came on for the 11th inning and issued an intentional walk to Angel Pagan. After a steal of second on a strikeout, Betances got a pair of ground outs though the last out came after a strange series of events. On the first pitch to Brandon Crawford, Betances wanted to intentionally walk him but threw it to the backstop but Pagan at third base did not lead off the base, preventing him from scoring.
Anthony Swarzak came on for the 12th inning and gave up a lead off double to Trevor Brown. After recording the first out, Mac Williamson struck again as the run-scoring single put the Giants ahead. The Yankees went down in order against Hunter Strickland in the bottom half of the inning to end tonight's difficult loss.
Win – Santiago Casilla (2-3)
Loss – Anthony Swarzak (1-1)
