According to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, both Greg Bird and Starlin Castro are set to begin rehab assignments this week. Bird is expected to begin his rehab assignment on Wednesday, while Castro is scheduled to start his on Friday. Since May 2, Bird has been sidelined due to a nagging ankle injury. The 24-year-old underwent surgery on July 29, and there were doubts that his season could possibly be over. Now, just 29 days after undergoing surgery, Bird appears back on track and ready for a return. In just 19 games this season, Bird had his share of offensive struggles. The left-handed hitting first baseman picked up just six hits through his first 60 at-bats while striking out 22 times in the process. Castro landed on the disabled list on June 27 with a hamstring injury, and rehabbed his way back onto the field. However, the 27-year-old re-aggravated the injury, forcing him to once again be sidelined. Prior to the injury, Castro was having an outstanding first half of the season. In 79 games, Castro posted a slash line of .307/.344/.472, and was named to the American League All-Star Team. Along with Bird and Castro's progress, Matt Holliday is making strides towards getting back on the field. The 37-year-old veteran took batting practice on Sunday prior to the Bronx Bombers series finale against the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees offense could greatly benefit if they get all three players back in the everyday lineup. For a lineup that has struggled a bit offensively, they could definitely use a spark as they battle for a American League playoff spot.
