Yankees Notes: Judge to start at 1B, Bumgarner trade in works
Luke Voit will miss the beginning of the season with a partially torn meniscus. Initially, the plan was for Jay Bruce to fill in at first base for the Yankees. However, the organization came up with a better plan: Aaron Judge.
Judge will be tapped as the Opening Day first baseman today in the Bronx. "We saw Judge's 6'7 frame and figured this was a no brainer," said GM Brian Cashman. "Hopefully it helps him stay healthy as well." The move frees up right field, which will be patrolled by Bruce, Brett Gardner, and Mike Tauchman until Voit returns.
When asked what prompted the move, Cashman said "I was inspired by some fans on Twitter. I know some of the ideas on there are wild, but I actually listen to the fans on a lot of issues. Why do you think we signed Cole?"
Speaking of pitching, Cashman said the fans on Twitter also inspired him to strike up trade talks with the Diamondbacks for Madison Bumgarner. "I thought the rotation was set, but I was wrong. We need another big game pitcher and that's exactly what Bumgarner is," said the Yankee GM. It'll be interesting to see if the Yankees do get a deal done.
Friendly reminder, today isn't just Opening Day. Happy April Fools’ Day.
