On Saturday morning, the Yankees announced that Masahiro Tanaka was placed on the disabled list due to right shoulder inflammation. In a corresponding move, the club has called up Giovanny Gallegos, the club's No. 30 ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline, from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. It has been a tough week for the Yankees starting rotation. Along with Tanaka, CC Sabathia is also sidelined, as he is currently dealing with right knee inflammation. Tanaka is in the midst of his worst statistical season in the big leagues. In 23 starts this season, the right-hander is 8-10 with a 4.93 ERA. Although he has struggled, Tanaka has pitched better of late. The 28-year-old has pitched in six or more innings in four of his last five starts, and looked like he was ready to turn his season around. The news comes at a bad time for the Yankees, as they are currently fighting for a playoff spot. With the loss of Tanaka, the Bronx Bombers will have to internally fill his void in the starting rotation for the time being. Tanaka's next scheduled start was supposed to be on Monday. The club has not officially announced who will start in Tanaka's place.
