Yankees prospect Alexander Figueredo shot and killed in Venezuela
George A. King of the The New York Post reported yesterday that 20-year-old Yankees prospect Alexander Figueredo was shot and killed in Venezuela back on November 27. According to a source close to Venezuela's baseball scene, Figueredo was shot multiple times at a party in Guacara and died of the subsequent wounds. The lefty pitcher missed all of 2016 while on the suspended/restricted list for reasons unknown. King writes, "the cause for the suspension was not known; however, for a young player to be suspended for a year, the circumstances had to be serious." Due to this fact, along with not being regarded as a top prospect, the team was unlikely to bring him back for 2017. In the 2015 Dominican Summer League season, the 18-year-old Figueredo went 5-0 with a 1.89 ERA in 12 games (11 starts.) He allowed 55 hits across 57 innings while striking out 52 and walking 22. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.
