Yankees receive unsettling news on top prospect Gleyber Torres
Updated Post (Apr. 19, 6:34 p.m.) -- Yankees top prospect Gleyber Torres has been placed on Double-A Trenton's seven-day disabled list with mild right rotator cuff tendinitis, and isn't expected to miss significant time, according to multiple reports. Updated Post (Apr. 18, 9:36 p.m.) -- Following the Yankees' 4-1 loss to the White Sox on Tuesday, manager Joe Girardi announced that top prospect Gleyber Torres has bicep tendinitis, and will likely undergo an MRI. Orginal Post (Apr. 18, 8:26 p.m.) -- The Yankees aren't far away from seeing Didi Gregorius return to the lineup, but it appears there's another shortstop in the organization who's experiencing shoulder issues. Top hitting prospect Gleyber Torres, who was penciled in the No. 3 slot as the designated hitter for Double-A Trenton on Tuesday, was scratched from the lineup during batting practice due to a sore right shoulder, according to Kyle Franko of The Trentonian. “I’m not sure how it came about,” Trenton manager Bobby Mitchell told Franko. “I know when I was a player sometimes when you had a sore arm, it would effect your swing, too, because your strength is zapped. Hopefully, it’s just a tired arm and that’s it. When the doctor comes in and sees him, we’ll know more about what his status is for the future.” Despite posting encouraging numbers at the plate this spring, Torres' campaign with Trenton this April has been dull. In his first 10 games, the 20-year-old has hit just .237/.341/.342, with two RBI and nine hits in 38 total at-bats. Whether or not this injury requires time off, the plan was for Torres to rotate between playing shortstop, second base, and third. So far, he's played eight games at short.
