After recording a three-inning save in which he threw 51 pitches last night, it appeared likely that Bryan Mitchell would be optioned to Triple-A, as the Yankees had a need for a fresh arm in the bullpen. Mitchell was pretty impressive in his one outing since being called up, as he picked up his first career save in the process. In a corresponding move, the Yankees have called up 26-year-old Danny Burawa. The right-hander has appeared in 26 games for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, posting a 1-1 record with a 1.75 ERA in 36 innings pitched. The Yankees also placed outfielder Mason Williams on the disabled list retroactive to June 20th. Williams was pulled from Friday's game after he jammed his shoulder diving back to first base on a pickoff attempt, and had an MRI after, which came back clean. Williams hoped to only miss a few days of action, but it appears as if this injury will sideline him a bit longer than anticipated. According to Dan Jennings of LoHud.com, manager Joe Girardi said the club didn't want to rush Williams back. To replace Williams on the roster, the Yankees announced that they have recalled outfielder Ramon Flores. The 23-year-old was with the big league club earlier in the season, posting a slash line of .269/.308/.577 in his nine games as he replaced the injured Jacoby Ellsbury in the lineup. Along with the roster moves the team announced, the club also got some bad news about one of the relief pitchers.
Sergio Santos will have Tommy John. Tough break. He was great 6/15 vs Marlins(Came in with bases loaded got out unscathed w/2ks) #yankees — Meredith Marakovits (@M_Marakovits) June 21, 2015
Santos was placed on the disabled list due to elbow inflammation, but his injury turned out to be more serious than expected. The 31-year-old only made two appearances for the Yankees, but posted a 4.96 ERA in his combined 14 appearances with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Yankees. Jennings also reported that Ivan Nova was in the Yankees clubhouse on Sunday morning, as it appears the right-hander is almost close to returning. However, before making a decision on Nova, Girardi told reporters that he wanted to speak with General Manager Brian Cashman before making a final decision.
