Yankees send Chasen Shreve, Giovanny Gallegos to Cardinals for 1B Luke Voit

Following Saturday's gripping 5-4 win over the Kansas City Royals in the second game of a doubleheader, the Yankees announced they have sent LHP Chasen Shreve & RHP Giovanny Gallegos to the St. Louis Cardinals for 1B Luke Voit & international signing bonus pool money.

Off the bat, this move seems odd for a few reasons. To start, Shreve has come on of late, recently posting his first save and becoming a more reliable member out of the bullpen for Aaron Boone. Sending Shreve packing now for an offensive player with less than 100 Major League at-bats seems a bit perplexing. That being said, the addition of Zach Britton made Shreve's role as a lefty middle reliever a bit redundant given the quality of the other bullpen arms.

In 234 AB's with Triple-A Memphis, Voit was hitting .299 with nine homers, 36 RBI and .891OPS.

What we must do, though, is continue to trust in Brian Cashman and his ability to think ahead and outside of the box. Voit clearly has potential otherwise this trade would not have been made, and the team is lacking in organizational depth at first base.  The move is reminiscent to last year's deal with Milwaukee that netted the Yankees Garrett Cooper for Tyler Webb.

Ultimately, this trade will most likely fall into the abyss with countless other midseason moves made in previous years, but at such a critical point in the season when pitching has become such a huge priority, excuse us if we scratch our heads just a bit with this one.
