Yankees Spring Training Game 22: Yankees fall to Rays at home
Tampa Bay Rays 6 – New York Yankees 2
The Yankees hosted the Tampa Rays in a night loss.
CC Sabathia started for the Yankees as he continues to compete for a spot on the starting rotation with the season approaching quickly. After getting the first two outs, constant Rays' third baseman Evan Longoria hit a home run to left center to put the Yankees in an early deficit. The Rays came out swinging in the second inning when Desmond Jennings led off with a double, scoring on a single by Kevin Kiermaier to put the Rays ahead by two.
The Yankees managed to get on the board when Brian McCann led off the bottom of the second with a double. Carlos Beltran followed with a single to left field that scored McCann and cut the two-run deficit in half. Sabathia managed to hold the Rays to just two runs as he finished tonight's start with three scoreless innings.
In five innings, CC Sabathia allowed two runs on six hits while walking one and striking out four.
Tyler Olson came in for relief and provided little of that. Outfielder Corey Dickerson started the sixth inning with a triple. A ground out put the Rays ahead by three and a bases-loaded single from Logan Morrison two batters later plated two more runs in a five-run sixth inning that put the Yankees in a significant deficit.
In 2/3 of an inning, Tyler Olson allowed four runs on three hits while walking one without a strikeout.
The Yankees added a run in the seventh inning after Pete Kozma hit a one-out triple. Reliever Steve Geltz threw a wild pitch that brought Kozma home to bring the Yankees within four but ultimately falling short.
