New York Yankees 4 – New York Mets 4 (10 innings) The Subway Series gets the usual Florida relocation when the Yankees visit the New York Mets in the Spring. The Yankees sent Ivan Nova to the mound and he worked around three hits and one walk in his three innings of work. He did not allow a run and struck out one. In the first two innings against Mets starter Jacob deGrom, the Yankees scattered three hits but could not bring a run in.
In the third inning, Aaron Hicks kept the inning alive with a two-out, ground-rule double to the right field corner. Chase Headley made the most of the two-out opportunity when he put a single to right field and putting the Yankees ahead by one. Prospect pitcher James Kaprielian pitched a scoreless fourth inning but his second inning of work did not go as well. After a one-out walk, Kaprielian gave up a single and a two-run double by T.J. Rivera to give the Mets the lead. After another single put runners on the corners, Asdrubal Cabrera grounded out to first base but a throw home to get the scoring runner was dropped by catcher Gary Sanchez, allowing the Mets to extend their lead to two on the error. Yoenis Cespedes hit a run-scoring single before a walk ended the day for James Kaprielian. In 1 2/3 innings, James Kaprielian allowed four runs, two earned, on four hits with two walks and a strikeout. Relievers Nick Goody and Johnny Barbato held the Mets off the scoreboard while the bats chipped away at the three-run deficit. Chris Parmelee led off the seventh inning with a double and came around to score on a wild pitch later in the inning. By the ninth inning, the Yankees trailed by two and faced lefty Antonio Bastardo. With one out in the inning, Kyle Higashioka smashed a moonshot to left field for a deep solo home run. Then with two outs, Sebastian Valle tied the game with a solo home run of his own. The Yankees went down in order in their half of the 10th inning and Jacob Lindgren was tasked with the bottom half of the inning.
