Yankees to sign Hideki Matsui

Well, Hideki Matsui will be returning to the Yankees.

For one day.

Plans are in the works for the Yankees to sign Matsui to a one-day contract so he can retire as a Yankee, according to George King of the New York Post. Matsui originally announced his retirement from baseball back in December.

Signed prior to the 2003 season, Matsui quickly became a fan favorite. Over his seven years with New York, “Godzilla” was named to two All-Star teams, and hit .292/.370/.482 with 140 homers and 540 RBIs. He was named the World Series MVP in 2009 after securing the Yankees’ 27th World Championship with one of the greatest World Series performances of all time. In that series, he hit .615 with three homers and eight RBIs.

After the Yankees, Matsui went on to play with the Angels, A’s and Rays before announcing his retirement.

The Yankees will give out Hideki Matsui bobbleheads on July 28 at Yankee Stadium.
