Yankees Spring Training Game 15: Jeter and Rivera make their Spring debut

Atlanta Braves 2 — New York Yankees 1

On an emotional day, Yankees saw the Spring debut of Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera in today’s 2-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves.

Without a hesitation, Derek Jeter got his Spring off to a great start by swinging at the first pitch and pulling a single to left field. The Yankees captain got the clearance to play in today’s game and got one hit in two at-bats as the designated hitter in today’s game. This was his first game since fracturing his ankle in last year’s postseason. Ichiro Suzuki got two hits today and Ronnier Mustelier hit a triple to center field.

Mariano Rivera made his Spring debut and pitched a perfect 5th inning with two strikeouts. Today is Rivera’s first in-game appearance since his season ended last year with a torn ACL. His pitches consistently stayed around 89-91 and his two strikeouts were both looking. Starting pitcher Jose Ramirez pitched the first four innings and made a very strong impression. In his start, Ramirez allowed just one hit while striking out four and allowed no runs or walks. Ramirez expressed a tremendous amount of poise and confidence as he was able to get some striking out on full count changeups, unusual for rookie pitchers. Joba Chamberlain and Cody Eppley each had a scoreless inning of work.

Win – Anthony Varvaro

Loss – Francisco Rondon
