Yankees Spring Training Game 25: Four-run inning put together in win

Boston Red Sox 0 — New York Yankees 4

The Yankees manufactured a four-run second inning in today’s 4-0 win over the Boston Red Sox.

Left-hander Vidal Nuno started today’s game and pitched five scoreless innings. He allowed two hits with one walk and one strikeout. David Robertson and Joba Chamberlain had a scoreless inning of work in their appearances. Josh Spence got one out on a ball hit back to him and would exit the game with an apparent injury. Cody Eppley would finish the inning and Mark Montgomery would complete the shutout with a scoreless ninth inning.

The Yankees will be without a lot of their power for the upcoming season and versatility and quality outs would be huge in making the most of scoring opportunities. Juan Rivera, the possible starting first baseman for Opening Day, started the second inning with a single. Ben Francisco, a good candidate for a starting outfield job for Opening day, hit a double to put runners on second and third. Jayson Nix did the job when he hit a deep fly ball to right field for a sacrifice fly, bringing in one run and moving the trail runner to third. Chris Stewart, competing for the starting catcher’s job, came through with a runner in scoring position by hitting a single to left field. Thomas Neal and Melky Mesa would get base hits to load the bases and eventually score on a wild pitch by Doubront. Brett Gardner would walk and Eduardo Nunez, like Nix, would put a sacrifice fly into center field to complete a four-run second inning. In the second inning, there were five hits, two sacrifice flies and a walk without a home run. This may be a frequent way the Yankees score in this coming season so it was a pleasant sight to see.

Win – Vidal Nuno

Loss – Felix Doubront
