Yankees Spring Training Game 31: Yankees hold on to win

New York Yankees 11 — Baltimore Orioles 8

The Yankees held off the Baltimore Orioles in tonight’s high scoring 11-8 win.

David Phelps started tonight’s game as he prepares for the 2013 season as a starting pitcher. Phelps was effective through his first four innings, including striking out the side in the 4th inning. In the 5th inning, Phelps would face adversity when outfielder Nate McLouth hit a two-run home run off of him. Rebounding from allowing a run to score is a necessity of a starting pitcher so Phelps would continue to work and would give up an additional run before ending the inning with a pair of strikeouts. David Phelps would start the 6th inning with a strikeout before ending his night. In 5.1 innings, Phelps gave up three runs on four hits with two walks and nine strikeouts. Josh Spence would give up a run in 0.2 of an inning of work. Branden Pinder would give up four runs. Three more minor league relievers would piece together the remainder of the game.

The Yankees scored first in the 2nd inning with three runs. Addison Marusnak brought in the first run with a groundout. Bobby Wilson doubled in the second run of the inning. Eduardo Nunez singled in the third run of the inning. A pair of walks and a double steal in the 6th inning got the Yankees in a run-scoring opportunity, which Bobby Wilson took advantage of with a sacrifice fly. The 7th inning is when the Yankees put themselves ahead well with six runs. A simple infield single by Eduardo Nunez got the inning started. Brennan Boesch and Ben Francisco could be competing for an outfield job and they might as well have been competing head-to-head. The pair of outfielders would hit back-to-back home runs, Boesch’s being a two-run home run. Top Yankees prospect Mason Williams got his first Spring at-bat and made the most of it. Williams would bring in two runs on a double to left field. Recently acquired first baseman Lyle Overbay got two hits in five at-bats tonight.
