Sticking vaccinated fans in nosebleeds sends wrong message

BRONX, N.Y. — Yankee Stadium and Citi Field are encouraging bad behavior with their new seating policies. Both teams have been encouraging fans to get vaccinated against COVID-19. Yet, the latest move by both clubs sends a bad message and is hardly incentivizing fans to become immunized.

According to a report in the Gothamist, each venue will stick fans who want to sit in “vaccinated only” sections, in the nosebleeds. That being said, if you are vaccinated you can still sit wherever you want. Yet, it basically rewards bad behavior by telling people who want to sit in fully vaccinated sections that they’d have to sit in the worst sections in the stadium.

Oh but the stupidity doesn’t end there though.

The article goes on to say that vaccinated fans will be able to sit in 100% capacity sections, while unvaccinated fans remain in 33% capacity sections, with six-foot social distancing rules in effect. Fans in either section must wear face masks when not actively drinking or eating.

So, you’re also punishing vaccinated fans who wouldn’t need to wear a mask outdoors if everyone was vaccinated. In fact, you could have a sellout crowd with zero mask-wearing if you required every fan to be vaccinated.

One would think the team would want to maximize attendance and mandate vaccinations after losing so much money last year.

It’s very convoluted, confusing and completely misses the point in rewarding people for doing the right thing and getting vaccinated.
