Earlier in the week, Bird played catch, took ground balls at first base, and did some tee work in the batting case. According to Brendan Kuty of NJ Advanced Media, Bird extended his rehab progression on Friday as he ran the bases on the field at Yankee Stadium. If all goes as planned, Bird is expected to start his rehab assignment, according to manager Joe Girardi. The 24-year-old is expected to join the Class-A Advanced Tampa Yankees on Sunday. After getting off to a red-hot start this spring, Bird struggled at the start of the season. In 19 games, Bird posted a slash line of .100/.250/.200, picking up only six hits in his first 60 at-bats. Although he struggled early on, the Yankees could definitely benefit from having a healthy Greg Bird in their everyday lineup. The Yankees are hopeful that Bird can return to the offensive weapon they hoped he would be at the start of the season.
