The Yankees came back against the Orioles for the second consecutive game and in the process passed them, along with the Indians, in the standings. Going into tonight, the Yankees are now only 1 game behind the Rays, who have been struggling mightily of late. Here are how the teams in contention fared yesterday:

Rangers: 7-5 loss vs Pirates. Matt Garza sloppy for Rangers as they continue to slide in the standings.

Rays: 7-3 loss vs Red Sox. Mike Carp hits grand slam in the 10th to down Rays.

Orioles: 5-4 loss vs Yankees. O’s again lose a close one to Yanks.

Indians: 6-2 loss vs Royals. Indians held to only 4 hits in loss.

Yankees: 5-4 win vs Orioles. 3 solo home runs power Yankees to victory.

Royals: 6-2 win vs Indians. “Big game” James Shields lives up to his nickname.
