Home was stolen in game one, and game two had a walk off homer. Michael Pineda (1-1, 5.29 ERA) and Drew Smyly (0-2, 2.91 ERA) have a lot to live up to in game three. Pineda pitched a quality outing his last start against the A’s. He gave up just two runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts through six innings. In seven career starts against Tampa Bay, he is 2-1 with a 2.70 ERA.

Smyly pitched eight innings of no run, one hit ball and struck out 11 against the Red Sox. He took a no decision despite the great outing, and hasn’t given up more than five hits in his three starts. His 0.65 WHIP this season is the best in the Majors, along with his strikeout and walk rates being career bests. In six career appearances against the Yanks, he is 1-0 with a 1.82 ERA and five earned runs in 24 2/3 innings.

Michael Pineda (3-0, 3.86 ERA) was originally scheduled to start this game, then got pushed to Friday due to a six man rotation, now hes back starting today after Tanaka landed on the DL. He will go for the sweep against Drew Smyly (0-0, 3.86 ERA) in a day game at the stadium. Pineda’s last time out against the Mets was impressive. He gave up one run on five hits with seven strikeouts through 7 2/3 innings.

Smyly made his first start of the season Friday against the Blue Jays. He is still building up his pitch count after starting the season on the DL with shoulder tendinitis. He threw just 4 2/3 innings allowing two runs on four hits, one homer, and striking out five. He is 1-0 with a 1.17 ERA in three career appearances in the Bronx.

Tidbits:

The Yanks will go for their second sweep against the Rays this year and their seventh straight win going back to last season.

The Yanks have won 10 of their last 12.

Alex Rodriguez should be back in the lineup after getting a rest day yesterday. He is one homer away from tying Willie Mays for fourth all time.

Shane Greene (3-1, 2.89 ERA) takes a stab at ending the losing streak as he takes on newly-ish acquired Drew Smyly (1-1, 2.08 ERA). Greene’s last start was his best as a rookie. He threw a career high eight scoreless innings against the Tigers on, allowing five hits, which helped the Bombers hold on to a one run lead and earn him his third win.

Smyly, dealt from Detroit in the Price deal, was solid in his second start for the Rays against the Rangers. He allowed no runs on three hits, three walks and nine strikeouts to earn his first win as a Ray. He threw 7 2/3 innings using 116 pitches. “It felt great,” Smyly said. “It was a good game for me and for the team. We scored a lot of runs. I was able to pitch pretty good. If you’re making it into the eighth, you’re doing something right.”

Brian McCann was able to perform catching drills and take batting practice Friday, and could be activated from the seven day concussion disabled list as early as Sunday. “I’m really happy with the way today went as a whole,” McCann said. “Now it’s a matter of seeing how I feel in an hour, seeing how I feel in two hours. I’ll know more tonight.”
