On this date in Yankees history: 'A Thrilla by Godzilla!'
BRONX, N.Y. — On this date in 2003, Hideki Matsui made a grand entrance on the big stage in the Bronx. The newest superstar import from Japan, Matsui wasted no time endearing himself to the Bronx faithful.
During the home opener at Yankee Stadium, the New York Yankees played host to the Minnesota Twins.
With the Yankees ahead 3-1 in the fifth frame, Matsui busted the contest open with a grand slam to right off Joe Mays.
Much like Jason Giambi the year before against (you guessed it, the Twins), Matsui earned his pinstripes.
New York would go on to win 7-3.
