On this day in Yankees history - The Captain hits number 3,000
It has been seven years since Derek Jeter became the 28th player in MLB history, first in Yankee history, to collect 3,000 career hits. It wasn't enough to just get 3,000 though, he had to do it in true Jeter fashion. On a 3-2 pitch from David Price in the third inning, he launched a home run to the left field bleachers. History with an exclamation point.
The Captain went 5-5 on the day, including an infield single in the bottom of the eighth that drove in the winning run in the 5-4 victory. He was just the second player to go 5-5 on the day that he got his 3,000th hit, the first being Craig Biggio. He was also just the second shortstop to reach 3,000 while still being an everyday player, Honus Wagner being the first. At 37-years-old at the time of the hit, only Ty Cobb, Hank Aaron, and Robin Yount were younger on the day of their 3,000th.
"If I would have tried to have written it and given it to someone, I wouldn't have even bought it, to be honest with you. It's just one of those special days."
