Game 109: Offense Arrives, A.J. Does Not

The Yankees scored a season-high 18 runs tonight. The Yankees gave starting pitcher A.J. Burnett a 13-1 lead. Unfortunately, A.J. Burnett couldn’t finish the required 5 innings to get the W for his record. He could not finish off the 5th inning as he went 4.1 innings giving up 7 runs on 13 hits.

The Yankees offense put up 23 hits. Derek Jeter led the assault with 5 hits tonight. Curtis Granderson drove in 5 runs on 4 hits. Robinson Cano & Eric Chavez each had a home run and 3 hits total for 4 runs. Every Yankee that started tonight’s game got at least 1 hit and scored 1 run.

A.J. Burnett is the big story of this game as he continues to struggle. His breaking ball did not look sharp and his fastball didn’t have much life to it, making it hittable. His struggles make it hard to label him a #2 starter.
