Tampa Bay Rays 5 — New York Yankees 1

The game went bad from the first batter in today’s series finale with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Logan Forsythe hit a double to start the game. He would advance on a sacrifice bunt and Evan Longoria would continue being a thorn in the side of the Yankees, hitting a ground-rule double to put the Rays ahead by one. The Yankees would tie it up in the bottom of the second inning on a Yangervis Solarte sacrifice fly but that was the most of their offense.

In the third inning, the Rays would get to CC Sabathia again. Desmond Jennings hit a one-out double and after a walk by Evan Longoria, Wil Myers would be the other Rays player killing the Yankees. Myers would hit a deep fly ball to right center field that Ellsbury tried to catch on the top of the wall but it would hit the wall and Ellsbury would tumble to the ground. The ball would carom to right field and Myers would complete the inside-the-park three-run home run to break the 1-1 tie. Sabathia would give up one more run in the fourth inning and would exit the game without finishing the inning.

In just 3.2 innings, CC Sabathia allowed five runs on 10 hits while walking one and striking out three.

The Yankees threatened occasionally but it would go for nothing against Erik Bedard. In six innings, Bedard allowed one run on six hits but walked one and struck out three. As a team, the Yankees were hitless in 10 opportunities with runners in scoring position. That’s far from winning baseball.

A major positive was the return of Alfredo Aceves. The former Yankee returned to his first major league team and came in for relief of Sabathia. He would allow three hits over 5.1 innings but retired the last 12 batters he faced in a great scoreless appearance that preserved the bullpen. Welcome back, Ace.

Win – Erik Bedard (1-1)

Loss – CC Sabathia (3-4)
