Triple-A: Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders
Columbus 5, SWB 4
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre dropped to the Columbus Clippers on Wednesday as Cody Eppley was charged with three runs in the eighth inning to blow a then 4-2 lead. Â Wednesday was a “bullpen game” for the RailRiders, who gave the start to relief pitcher Ryan Pope. He and top prospect Mark Montgomery combined to pitch the RailRiders through the first 5.1 innings, holding the Clippers in check. Addison Maruszak came off the bench to play right field and led the RailRiders with two hits on the day. Designated hitter Cody Johnson hit his first home run of the season with a fourth inning shot off Trevor Bauer and David Adams brought home two runs with an RBI single in the seventh inning.
Double-A: Trenton Thunder
Akron 5, Trenton 4
Trenton fell short in the rubber game of their series with the Akron Aeros on Wednesday night. Branden Pinder, who has struggled in April, was charged with his first loss of the season after allowing one run to score in the seventh inning. All four of Akron’s previous runs were charged to starter Caleb Cotham, who lasted four innings. Backup catcher Kyle Higashioka had a big day at the plate, netting two hits, including a solo home run in the second inning. Tyler Austin, Kyle Roller, and Ali Castillo also had multi-hit games for the Thunder.
High-A: Tampa Yankees
Clearwater 9, Tampa 7
Clearwater scored a run in the eighth and a run in the ninth to break a 7-7 tie and take the victory over the Tampa Yankees on Wednesday. Joel De La Cruz took the loss, but it was a rough outing from starter Scottie Allen that set the Yankees back. Allen allowed seven runs on eleven hits and three walks in just five innings. Offensively, the Yankees were led by second baseman Rob Refsnyder, who had a pair of hits and a pair of RBIs. Gary Sanchez, Francisco Arcia, and Fu-Lin Kuo each homered in the loss for Tampa.
Class-A: Charleston RiverDogs
Charleston 6, West Virginia 5
Charleston topped West Virginia on Wednesday afternoon despite three errors in the field. Reymond Nunez was the only Charleston starter not to record a hit, though even he reached by way of a walk. Greg Bird continued his solid start to the season by driving home two more runs for the RiverDogs. Â Outfielder Yeicok Calderon provided the team’s only extra-base hit with an RBI double. On the mound, Jose Campos allowed three runs on four hits in just three innings of work before giving way to Evan Rutckyj. He would limit the Power to just one run on three innings of work and earn the victory.
