Gary Sanchez promoted to Triple-A

Due to the injury of catcher Austin Romine, the Yankees will promote young catching prospect Gary Sanchez to Triple-A. Romine injured his thumb Friday evening in Scranton/Wiles-Barre game at Louisville. The extent of Romines injury is not known at this point.

Romine, 26, is hitting .267, including six homeruns. Romine has spent the entire season in the minors this year as he lost the second string job to current backup John Ryan Murphy. Romine has recovered well in the minors this season, driving in 35 runs.

The 22-year-old Sanchez is hitting .262 this season in Double-A Trenton. The power-hitting catcher has had pop in his bat this year, blasting 12 homeruns and driving in 36 runs. His career high in a season in the homerun department is 18, set back in 2012. This is welcomed news for the Yankees after Sanchez hit just 13 long balls all of last season. For him to have 12 at this point in the season, the team has reason to believe he has found his power touch.

Sanchez has been highly touted in the Yankees system since his arrival as an international free agent in 2010.Β This will be his first appearance at the Triple-A level.
