What is the longest the Yankees have gone without an injury?

Twenty days. It took only 20 days into camp before the Yankees had an injury, with Zack Britton opting for surgery to remove a bone chip from his left elbow. I got curious: what is the longest the Yankees have gone without an IL-worthy injury? Can we top 20 days?

2019

Normally, I would try to list out all of the injuries. But I don’t want to bore you with a novel. Instead, I will summarize each month by showing the count of IL stints in each month:

Month

Number of Injuries

March

6

April

8

May

5

June

4

July

6

August

7

September

2

TOTAL

38

One day in March stood out: March 28. That was the day the Yankees placed Aaron Hicks, Didi Gregorius, Ben Heller, Dellin Betances, and Luis Severino on the injured list.

The longest time between any of the IL stints that season: 22 days between Luke Voit being placed on the IL with an abdominal strain on July 2 and Gary Sanchez hitting the shelf on July 24 with a left groin strain.

2020

Here are all the injuries from last year:

Oof, August was not pretty. We lost the entire top half of our lineup, a good starting pitcher, two of our best relievers, and our backup catcher. So it looks like the longest we went without an injury from Aroldis Chapman’s bout with COVID and Kyle Higashioka’s strained oblique — an impressive span of 25 days! And if we don’t count COVID-related absences, it was 32 days! And if we only count injuries during the season, it was 18 days!

In conclusion, it seems the longest we can go without an injury is around 20-25 days. That’s almost one month free of serious injuries!Â
