New York Yankees 5 — Milwaukee Brewers 6

The former Yankee turned back the Yankees in the series finale.

From the beginning of the game, you would think the Yankees had this game well in control.  Brett Gardner opened with a double and after one out, Garza would lose the strike zone, walking the bases loaded. Kelly Johnson would hit a ground rule double to deep right center and Yangervis Solarte would hit to the moment, hitting a fly ball deep enough to give David Phelps a three-run lead and Matt Garza was taxed for 40 pitches.

Throughout David Phelps start today, he never had a 1-2-3 inning. He would escape trouble in the first two innings but the third inning would be damaging. Matt Garza, the pitcher, opened with a double down the right field line. Carlos Gomez would be hit by a pitch and they advanced on a sacrifice. Rickie Weeks and Lyle Overbay would hit a pair of singles to bring home two runs and make it a one-run game.

After the first inning, Matt Garza settled down and silenced the Yankees while his offense got him off the hook in the sixth inning. Jean Segura and Martin Maldonado would open the inning with a pair of singles, knocking Phelps out of the game. Mixing-and-matching would start as pinch-hitter Scooter Gennett was meant to face Phelps, but when Phelps was replaced with Matt Thornton, Jonathan Lucroy replaced Gennett. By the way, Lucroy is a better hitter than Gennett.

The pinch-hitting catcher Lucroy would hit a single to center field and the game was tied. Dellin Betances would come in to try and stop the fire. After getting the first out, a double to deep right field brought in the go-ahead run and a fielder’s choice brought in the insurance.

In five innings, David Phelps allowed four runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out one. He faced two batters in the sixth but Matt Thornton’s runner scoring was the go-ahead run.

In the seventh inning, Yangervis Solarte would bring home his 20th run of the season with a single to make it a one-run game. In the ninth inning, the Yankees had to overcome Francisco Rodriguez, who entered the game perfect in 15 save opportunities without allowing an earned run.

With two outs, Mark Teixeira ruined Francisco Rodriguez’s perfection with the seventh home run of his season. His second home run in as many games made it a new game but a former Yankee would ruin the comeback.

Adam Warren, in his second inning of work, got the first out before Rickie Weeks hit a double to right field. He would advance on a wild pitch and Warren would get a big strikeout of one former Yankee but the next one would do better. After playing 36 games with the Yankes in 2013, Mark Reynolds chose the Milwaukee Brewers over the New York Yankees. Reynolds would hit a single to left field, past the diving Solarte and that was the game.

Win – Francisco Rodriguez (1-0)

Loss – Adam Warren (1-2)
