Game 72: Cano, Kuroda Beat Cleveland

Cleveland Indians 1 — New York Yankees 7

Robinson Cano continues his hot hitting in tonight’s 7-1 against the Cleveland Indians.

Two runs in each of the first 3 innings provided an easy start for Hiroki Kuroda. The Japanese right-hander went 7 innings with the only run he allowed coming after he had exited the game. He struck out 7 through his 7 easy innings of work for his 7th victory of the season. Clay Rapada allowed one of his inherited runners to score but pitched a scoreless inning. Freddy Garcia also saw work tonight as the lead was well in hand and he pitched a perfect 9th to end the game.

Robinson Cano entered with very poor numbers with runners in scoring position but his recent hot hitting may have brought back the Robinson Cano we are used to. In a long 35-pitch 1st inning for Cleveland starter Josh Tomlin, Robinson Cano got a hit with runners on scoring position as he brought in two runs on a run-scoring double. Robinson Cano also showed why he was a wise choice as American League captain for the Home Run Derby this year with a home run in the 3rd inning. Nick Swisher followed Cano’s with a home run of his own that barely cleared the left field wall. Dewayne Wise also had a big night in a rare start in center field to give Curtis Granderson half of a day off. Wise hit a no-doubt home run in the 2nd inning for his first of the season and hit a run-scoring triple in the 6th inning. 4 of the 7 runs were scored by home runs as the Yankees continue to produce runs in the instant ways.

Win – Hiroki Kuroda (7-7)
