Game 20: Freddy Falters in Loss

Detroit Tigers 7 — New York Yankees 5

Freddy Garcia’s struggles continue in today’s 7-5 loss to the Detroit Tigers.

In 1.2 innings, Garcia gave up 6 runs on 5 hits for another very poor outing that called on the bullpen much earlier than anyone wants. Garcia’s season ERA has now ballooned to a terrible 12.51. After intentionally walking Prince Fielder with a base open, an 0-2 pitch that was left over the middle of the plate to leftfielder Andy Dirks was delivered to right field to give the Tigers an early lead that would never be lost. The Yankees cannot continue sending a starting pitcher to the mound if he cannot give quality innings. The answer could be in the bullpen as a number of relievers had to make up for the innings. In 7.1 innings, three Yankees relievers allowed just 1 run on 2 hits. The notable reliever that was used in today’s game was David Phelps, pitching 3 hitless, scoreless innings.

The Yankees offense was nearly non-existent in today’s game against Tigers lefty Drew Smyly. In 6 innings, Smyly gave up just 1 run on 2 hits, one being the first of two home runs by Nick Swisher. The second hit didn’t come until the 7th inning on a single by Alex Rodriguez. Curtis Granderson was the other Yankee that made it to today’s game for the offense with a solo home run in the 7th inning off of former Yankee Phil Coke. The Yankees were able to make things interesting in the 9th inning though. Tigers closer Jose Valverde came into the game with a 5-run lead and the first batter was Nick Swisher, hitting his second home run, the 11th time he hit a home run from both sides of the plate, 18th multi-home run game of his career. Curtis Granderson and Raul Ibanez made the game a two-run game. With Eric Chavez at the plate as the tying run, he hit an inside pitch to deep right field but came just short of the warning track, ending a dramatic rally short in today’s loss.
