Game 39: Pettitte Notches 1st W of 2012

Cincinnati Reds 0 — New York Yankees 4

Andy Pettitte pitched an amazing game in tonight’s 4-0 win over the Cincinnati Reds.

In Pettitte’s second start of the season, he went 8 scoreless innings with just 4 hits and 9 strikeouts. This was his longest outing since in Seattle in the 2010 season. All of the hits surrendered were singles. In the 1st inning, Pettitte had to pitch out of a jam as a passed ball and an error had a runner on 3rd with one out. Pettitte proceeded to strike out Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips. One run was good enough and while the Yankees did manage to get 4, they wasted a big opportunity.

The Yankees managed just 1 run until the 8th inning but the 6th inning was a huge opportunity to score that produced nothing. After a pair of singles and a walk, the Yankees had the bases loaded with no outs. Two force outs at home and a pop out helped Cincinnati escape a sure run-scoring opportunity. The Yankees had two home runs from Raul Ibanez and Robinson Cano in the 8th inning but as a team, the Yankees were hitless with runners in scoring position (0 for 7).

Win – Andy Pettitte (1-1)

Loss – Bronson Arroyo (2-2)
