Game 49: Defense & Homers Beat Yankees

New York Yankees 1 — Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 5

Home runs out of reach and base hits in reach led to tonight’s 5-1 loss to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Andy Pettitte took the mound in a visiting ballpark for the first time of his comeback year and the Angels didn’t make the visit a good one. In 7 innings of work, Pettitte gave up 5 runs on 9 hits. Albert Pujols hit his 8th home run of the season in the 3rd inning and Mark Trumbo hit his 9th in the 6th.

The Yankees offense could not get anything going as they faltered in big spots and opportunities were ruined by spectacular defense. Dan Haren allowed just 1 run over his 7 innings of work despite giving up 8 hits. Robinson Cano received two huge opportunities to make a big impact on this game with the bases loaded in the 3rd inning and the 9th inning but failed to bring in any runs, leaving a total of 8 runners on base. Nick Swisher may have felt as if he had a run of bad luck as two of his potential extra-base hits were robbed by outfielders Mike Trout and Peter Bourjos.

Win – Dan Haren (3-5)

Loss – Andy Pettitte (2-2)
