Game 5: Win Through The Wild

New York Yankees 5 — Baltimore Orioles 4 (12 innings)

It took the Yankees 12 innings and enduring the wild pitches of Freddy Garcia to win by a score of 5-4 over the Baltimore Orioles.

Freddy Garcia made his first start of the season and exhibited control that Yankees fans are sorely familiar with from former Yankee, A.J. Burnett. In Garcia’s 4.2 innings, he threw 5 wild pitches. Many of these wild pitches led to runs scoring without the need of a hit. An impressive appearance was by the rookie David Phelps. In his 2.1 innings of work, he didn’t allow a hit and struck out 4, all called third strikes. Cory Wade handled an additional workload with 2.1 innings. He allowed just 1 hit and 1 walk with 4 strikeouts. Mariano Rivera closed out tonight’s win in the 12th inning with 2 strikeouts.

Derek Jeter welcomed Wei-Yin Chen with a lead-off home run but besides that Chen did not have too bad of an outing tonight. Raul Ibanez came in in the 8th inning as a pinch hitter and managed to get a single and his first stolen base of the season but that would not be the biggest impact he made tonight. In the 12th inning, Raul Ibanez hit a ground-rule double that brought in the game-winning run.

Despite the win, the Yankees were a horrendous 2 for 18 with runners in scoring position. They managed to pull out a win tonight but this has been a problem that has occurred far too often with a team with such high expectations.

Win – Clay Rapada (1-0)

Loss – Pedro Strop (0-1)

Save – Mariano Rivera (1)
