Game 54: Martin Goes Grand

Tampa Bay Rays 0 — New York Yankees 7

Andy Pettitte continues to impress in tonight’s 7-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Andy Pettitte looks like he hasn’t missed a year of baseball as he went 7.1 scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts. The veteran left-hander looked dominant over the struggling offense of the Rays as they managed just 2 hits and were constantly behind in the count, swinging over the top of many breaking balls that dived into the dirt. The Yankees didn’t need to generate much offense when Pettitte is pitching like this, but they did and they were helped at times too.

Russell Martin was a big factor in tonight’s game with 3 hits. One of his 3 hits came with the bases loaded in the 4th inning and the ball was driven to right field for his 5th home run of the season. Earlier in the game, Rays starter James Shields was not helped out by his defense as a throwing error with the bases loaded brought in two runs in the 1st inning. The Yankees also put another run on the scoreboard with runners on the corner for a Nick Swisher double to have the Yankees hit 3 for 12 with runners in scoring position.

Win – Andy Pettitte (3-2)

Loss – James Shields (6-4)
