Game 56: Defense Slipped in Finale

Tampa Bay Rays 7 — New York Yankees 3

Some errors loomed large in tonight’s 7-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.

In a battle of left-handed aces, both CC Sabathia and David Price were far from dominant. Despite Sabathia’s 12 strikeouts through his 7 innings of work, he allowed 5 runs, 3 of them earned. The bottom of the Rays lineup got the best of Sabathia early in the game as the 7-8-9 hitters brought in two in the 4th. A throwing error by Alex Rodriguez in the 3rd inning created a bigger inning as two runs scored following the error. Later with the Yankees trailing by 3, still a score that’s well within reach, another error in right field by Nick Swisher expanded the lead in the 9th inning.

The Yankees offensive woes were on display again. With runners in scoring position, the Yankees were just 1 for 10. The Yankees were able to get David Price out after 5 innings of work. The Yankees made a tremendous threat to score off of Price in the 5th inning with the bases loaded but Alex Rodriguez’s hard-fought at-bat went for nothing as he struck out in an 11-pitch battle. Then Robinson Cano could not do anything with 2 outs as Price escaped with the lead. The Yankees sparingly made attempts at mounting a comeback that was never enough.

Win – David Price (8-3)
