Phil Hughes went 6 strong innings to get the Yankees their 7th straight win in tonight’s 7-2 win over the Washington Nationals.
In all of the starts by Phil Hughes, he has given up at least one home run. Today was the first start where he did not as he went 6 innings of 1-run baseball. He was also able to strike out 9 as he got his fourth straight victory of the season. David Robertson made his return to the mound tonight after being activated from the disabled list. He gave up 1 run while striking out 1 in the 9th inning to end tonight’s victory.
The Yankees have had success with Nationals starter Gio Gonzalez from his time in the American League with the Oakland Athletics but it didn’t show up until the 3rd inning. The Yankees were able to get 2 hits with runners in scoring position to give Hughes the early 2 run lead. Following Gonzalez’s exit, the Yankees continued to do something many are not used to seeing them do, getting hits with runners in scoring position and not doing it by home runs. A pair of two-run hits by Derek Jeter and Curtis Granderson busted open the game with the Yankees up by 5. The Yankees ended tonight’s game going 4 for 8 with runners in scoring position. The Yankees entered this game 0-12 in games that they do not hit a home run in and just when it appeared that they would overcome this, Curtis Granderson went deep for his 20th home run of the season in the 9th inning. The Yankees easily won tonight’s game for their 7th straight, and Joe Girardi’s 500th as a manager.
