Game 76: Yankees Blown Out

Chicago White Sox 14 — New York Yankees 7

A Yankees debut is ruined in tonight’s 14-7 blowout loss to the Chicago White Sox.

Adam Warren made his Yankees debut in place of the injured CC Sabathia. Warren would last just 2.1 innings after giving up 6 runs on 8 hits including 2 home runs. David Phelps was brought back to the major league roster to provide long relief in case Warren struggled. Phelps was able to go 3.1 innings and gave up 2 hits. The sacrificial lamb of the Yankees pitching staff was reliever Cory Wade. On 58 pitches through 2.1 innings, he gave up 6 runs on 7 hits in what has been a series of bad appearances. This decisive defeat led to backup outfielder Dewayne Wise coming in for 0.2 of an inning for relief in which he got out Paul Konerko and Alex Rios, the only 2 batters he faced.

The Yankees offense got to Jose Quintana early as Derek Jeter opened the bottom of the 1st with a double, surpassing Cal Ripken Jr. as 13th all-time on the hits list, and Curtis Granderson hit his 22nd home run of the season. A two-run double by Andruw Jones later in the inning gave the Yankees an early 4-run lead. After the lead had been surrendered, Jayson Nix brought in two with a double in the 4th. The Yankees offense could not overcome the ineffective pitching in tonight’s loss.

Win – Jose Quintana (3-1)

Loss – David Phelps (1-3)
