Gray good enough to lead Yanks past O’s

BALTIMORE — The night didn’t start well for Sonny Gray, but he and the team settled in as the Yankees won the opener against the Orioles, 4-1, at Camden Yards.

Manny Machado took the Yankee starter deep in the first inning but that was all the O’s would get all night. Gray, Chad Green, Dellin Betances, and Aroldis Chapman would limit the Baltimore offense to just five hits on the night.

As for the Yankee offense, they let a lot of opportunities go but did just enough for the win.

Gleyber Torres opened the scoring with an RBI single in the third. Greg Bird then gave New York the lead, 2-1, with a booming RBI triple to center field in the fifth.

The Yankees, though, did not stop there. Austin Romine, who had a nine-game hitting streak entering the game, extended it to ten with an RBI double that scored Didi Gregorius in the sixth.

In the seventh, facing a new pitcher in Tanner Scott, Aaron Judge laced his 16th home run of the year for the final run of the night for the Bombers.

While he did not end up giving up a run, Betances was once again wild and gave Baltimore an opening in the eighth. With just one-out, he would load the bases after two walks and a hit-by-pitch.

He, however, would strikeout Jonathan Schoop and get Chris Davis to line out to get out of the inning unscathed.

Aroldis Chapman would pitch a clean ninth inning to seal the win and nail down his 13th save of the season.

Masahiro Tanaka and Kevin Gausman go at it tomorrow with a 4:05 game.
