Holliday and Gardner homer twice in Yankees’ 8-3 victory

BALTIMORE – Matt Holliday and Brett Gardner each hit two home runs in the New York Yankees’ onslaught victory over the Baltimore Orioles. The Yankees scored eight runs on 14 hits and beat the O’s by a score of 8-3.

The slugging Yankee bats started off the game strong with solo homers by Gardner and Holliday in the first inning. Then, Holliday hit another solo shot in the third followed by a Gardner solo homer in the fourth. Yankees’ phenom Aaron Judge added to the early lead by doubling into the right-center field gap, plating home two more runs.

By the end of the fourth inning, the Yanks were already up 8-0 and the Orioles had expended two pitchers. Chris Tillman got the start for the Orioles and was roughed up in his 2.2 innings pitched. He allowed seven hits, five earned runs and walked two.

Luis Severino was dominant again in his outing on Tuesday night. After striking out seven in his previous start, he added another eight in the 6.1 innings he pitched against the O’s. The hard throwing righty allowed seven hits and only one walk – effectively lowering his ERA to 2.93 on the season, a team best.

Didi Gregorius was hit by a pitch on his left hand, but is optimistic that he will be able to play on Wednesday night.

With the win, the Yankees improved to 30-19 and moved to 3.5 games above the second place Boston Red Sox. Matt Holliday, Brett Gardner and Aaron Judge are single-handedly almost out-homering the Red Sox. The trio has 39 dingers to the Red Sox 42.

UP NEXT: Masahiro Tanaka will take on Kevin Gausman in a battle of the aces on Wednesday night. Tanaka will look to continue upon his stellar 13 strikeout outing.
