Instant Reaction: That game was dismal

Gut Reaction

That game had nothing good in it. We need to get healthy and rejuvenate fast.

Severino Struggled

When Luis Severino gets hit, he gets hit hard. He doesn’t induce too much soft contact. It’s a strikeout or a rocket off the bat. In his last start he didn’t have great command in the zone either, luckily he was facing the last-place White Sox and could muscle his way around their bats. The first place Astros aren’t going to allow pitchers to make mistakes.

Sevy has all the tools and he has shown us on multiple occasions that he is the real deal. I’d like to see him start working the zone better, moving the ball around on batters and changing eyesight. Right now it seems like his pitching strategy is simply, “here’s my fastball try and hit it. Okay now here’s my slider try and hit it. Okay here’s my change, hope you weren’t expecting that.”

Lineup Can’t Capitalize

Two on in the first.

Two on in the second.

Two on in the third.

We couldn’t get any of those runners to cross the plate. Brett Gardner gave one a good ride, but it fell into Josh Reddick‘s glove. Incredibly frustrating. This team has failed with runners in scoring position over and over again. At the time I still thought it was a good sign. We were getting runners on and making Mike Fiers work. Much like the last two games, we would eventually get through.

Nope. Instead, we went on to have four 1-2-3 innings. Brutal.

When the Astros went up 5-0 in the bottom of the 4th you could see the life get sucked out of the lineup. From that point forward this game turned into a boring and dismal affair.

We Need To Get Our Guys Back

The bullpen has been terrible. That’s the main crux of the matter, we all know that. It would be really nice to get some of our guys back though.

Starlin Castro is close.

CC Sabathia is close.

Adam Warren is close.

Those will be three big adds. Warren helps strengthen the pen, as much as he can… if Aroldis Chapman and Dellin Betances aren’t right then the pen is impossible to strengthen.

CC will send Luis Cessa back to Scranton. If the big guy can perform how he was before the injury that will be huge for us.

We need to get guys healthy, and we could really use the All-Star break to rejuvenate and collect ourselves.

No Shutout

The streak of never getting shutout lives. Saddest yay ever.
