Nunez powers Yankees past Mets

The Yankees took game 1 of this weekend’s Subway Series, 5-1.  Ivan Nova labored through 5 innings, getting out of a bases loaded jam by striking out Angel Pagan; it would be the last pitch he threw.  Nova seemed off all night, unable to consistently locate his fastball.  He did what a good pitcher has to do however—lasted 5 innings and gave the Yankees a chance to win.

In the top of the sixth, Posada was caught looking with the bases loaded while pinch-hitting for Nova, who exited after 89 pitches.  Nova would have returned for the bottom of the sixth had this been an American League game, but Girardi elected to pinch hit Posada.  It was a move that made sense in a two run game and a red-hot Posada sitting on the bench.  Posada had a tremendous June, batting .382 for the month, but struck out looking with the bases loaded and one out.

Eduardo Nunez was the story offensively for the Yankees, who picked up where Derek Jeter left off—killing the Mets.  Nunez went 4-for-4, his first career four hit game.

Bartolo Colon will start tomorrow, his first start off the disabled list.  It will be interesting to see how Colon—a 38 year old—rebounds off the DL.  For the Yankees, Colon has been solid all season and will add to their pitching depth if he can remain healthy.
