Pirates Double Header (5/18/14)

Hiroki-Kuroda-walking-off-mound

Friday’s rainout was rescheduled as the second game of a single admission doubleheader Sunday. The first game of the doubleheader will begin at 1:05 PM as scheduled and the second will start approximately a half hour following the conclusion of the first. Hiroki Kuroda (2-3, 4.62 ERA) will get things started against Charlie Morton (0-5, 3.22 ERA). Kuroda has had a hot and cold season, but has worked six innings or more in six of his eight starts. He took a no decision his last time out against the Mets, giving up four runs on seven hits in six innings of work.

Morton gave up three unearned runs in the first inning against St Louis and had to pitch from behind the whole game in what became a loss. He’s allowed only three earned runs in his last three starts and nine unearned all year. He is making his first career start against the Yanks and is looking for his first win of the year.

Vidal Nuno+New+York+Yankees_Cleveland+Indians_2013Vidal Nuno (1-1, 6.43 ERA) will finish off the day against Gerrit Cole (3-3, 3.76 ERA). Nuno was hammered in his last outing against the Mets where he only lasted 3 1/3 innings. He allowed seven runs (five earned) and a season high four walks. He is 1-1 with a 4.94 ERA in five starts this year.

Cole was coming off an impressive eight inning outing when he faced the Brewers his last time out. However, he didn’t follow up that great outing with another. He walked three and gave up seven hits over just 5 2/3 frames against the Brew Crew. It was only the second time this season that he hadn’t completed six innings.

Derek Jeter will likely play in one of the two games, though Joe Girardi said Saturday he didn’t know which one yet. “I’ll talk to Derek and see,” Girardi said. “But I can’t tell you which one I’ll play him in. I would think he’ll only play one game.”

Notes on the game

In seven career starts against the Bucs, Kuroda is 5-1 with a 1.84 ERA.

The Yankees are 6-4 in interleague play so far this year, and all four of their shutout wins have come against the NL.

Mark Teixeira extended his hitting streak to six games Saturday with a two run homer, his ninth of the year and 350th all time. Four of his nine bombs have come in the last six games.
