Preview: Yankees at Blue Jays (8/31/14)

Brandon McCarthy (5-3, 2.47 ERA) tries to right the ship, both his and the Yankees’, as he takes on J.A. Happ (8-8, 4.40 ERA) in the final game north of the boarder. McCarthy was hammered for five runs on nine hits in 6 1/3 innings against the Tigers, his most runs allowed in pinstripes. “I’ve thrown well enough to get through outings where I haven’t been as sharp, and today, that’s the disappointment,” McCarthy said. “I’d like to be able to fight back. You know days like this you’re going to give up some runs, especially against a good team like that. You’d like to be able to limit it a little bit more.”

Happ allowed three runs over six innings against the Sox in his last start. All three of the runs came in the fifth inning on home runs by Mookie Betts and Dustin Pedroia. Since the All Star break, the Blue Jays scored three runs or fewer in five of his eight starts. “It’s definitely tough to take,” Happ said. “I felt better than that. They put some good swings on a couple of balls, but other than that, I felt like I was executing pretty well.”

Jacoby Ellsbury injured his left ankle while sliding into home plate on Friday, he did not play on Saturday. “His ankle is sore,” Joe Girardi said. “You can call it an ankle sprain; you can call it whatever you want. I think we’ll see if he can be a player before Tuesday. He wants to play. You just have to see what he’s capable of doing.”
